Welcome

I’m Danielle, a country girl stuck in the suburbs. I grew up riding horses, weeding the garden, and helping in the kitchen.

I loved it.

My mom somehow managed to corral a wild, horse-crazy teenager and taught her how to clean a bathroom, grocery shop on a budget, and keep a clean and tidy house.

I really, really, didn’t love that.

Homemade Bread

I still would rather muck out the barn than clean a bathroom, but I’ve learned that keeping a neat clean home gives me more time to do the things I want to do. It’s really hard to learn how to can food when you have to dig out the kitchen first. It’s much faster to make homemade bread when you have a clean counter to knead it on.

The more I declutter and simplify my home, the easier it is to do the things I love.

Fresh Carrots

I may be stuck living inside the city limits but that doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten my country roots.

My neighbors didn’t know what to think when I brought home chickens, and they were even more shocked when I started piling manure on the lawn to plant a garden.

Thankfully, everybody loves fresh eggs.

My garden and chickens help to save my family money on groceries, but I’m also a big believer in cooking with basic pantry ingredients to lower my grocery bill even more. Food doesn’t have to taste ‘cheap’ just because it is made from simple inexpensive ingredients. Some of my simplest recipes are also the best.

Now that I’m a mom, I realize how valuable the rural lifestyle is for raising a family. I always knew I wanted to live in the country, but I became even more determined to give my baby the kind of childhood my husband and I had.

Being able to play outside after dark, going fishing with grandpa, working in the garden, and getting so covered in mud that mom makes you hose off outside before you can come in the house.

These are some of my most treasured childhood memories.

These are the kind of memories I want for my child too.

I’m on a mission to bring country living into town until my family and I can escape city life and return to our roots.
